College Cost Reduction Act of 2007

Sent to the President’s desk is the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, the greatest overhaul to government assistance for higher education since the GI bill. Is it perfect, of course not. Science and mathmatics in America are in a dismal state, nearly 1/4 of the people in the U.S. do not graduate. The biggest change, forgiveness after 10 years instead of 25 years of public service. Oh, and it is complex - you can read all 39 pages for yourself (pdf).

  1. Twenty five percent fail to graduate?? Can that be right?

  2. You are correct, actually the percentage of people in the U.S. finishing high school is 69.7% (2004 numbers), so more than thirty percent fail to graduate. I was citing from my head the number for my state, which is 75.3%. I made the mistake of assuming that Arkansas was indicitive of the country as a whole. Some states do as well as 83% and some as poorly as 50.7%. If you want to explore this further, see the statistics at http://www.higheredinfo.org/dbrowser/index.php?measure=23
