A lot of friends have asked me for this data, so I am posting it here. Over the summer I played in Marketwatch’s Virtual Stock Exchange Kickoff game. I came in 2nd out of 4500 people or so playing, losing to 1st place by under $250 (and won a nifty Palm Treo 700w smartphone). It was a 60 day game, each person started with $100k. I didn’t do my first trade until 15 days into the contest because of work committments, so could have done much better . . . or much worse. 44 days total (which I think works out to 34 or 35 trading days), 50% margin, $15 trading fees, no afterhours trading, and a 20 minute delay in execution (note that this wait turned what should have been a gain into a loss a few times). Final account balance: $334,470.03.
The first table are my trades, and the second my daily account balance. I used only information publically available on Marketwatch.com, Smartmoney.com, thestreet.com, and finance.yahoo.com to build my trades. Some of these trades are swag (some wild ass guess) bets, which you can do when it is play money. In real life, not so much. Be sure to set your trailing limits.
